Phone Sim Card

Getting A Sim Card

Depending on wether you are a tourist visa or business/work visa, affects which kind of sim card you can get.

Tourist visa holders can get sim cards valid for set periods of time i.e 14 days, 30 days. I have heard that the prices are slightly higher but if you need one, you need one.

If you have a business/work visa and want a sim that isn’t short term need to register your passport with the phone company. Here they will usually let you choose your telephone number from a list.

It’s a fairly simple process really, you need to look for the walk-in offices. I personally used Viettel. I go in take a number and wait my turn. Then I just explain I would like a basic sim that allows me to top up and buy data packages. She then notes my passport details, asks me to select my new telephone number and then I pay a small fee. Voila done.

Loading Money

When it comes to putting money on your phone it is pretty simple. There are two types of top up. Firstly head to a big named convince store like Vinmart+ and state how much you wish to load and the phone company. Example: Viettel, 200,000 please.

You will then receive a receipt looking like this. There is a long code that needs to be entered via phone call.

Now, each company I believe varies in this but with viettel you enter this:

Simply press call and you should get a message informing you of the successful load.

The second type can be obtained in some conviences store or more commonly the little stand you see on the street. They tend to tell sodas, cigarettes, sim top-ups. Just look for the sign that says your phone company and request the amount. This type is the old school mini card with a scratch back. Simply scratch off the back to obtain the code and again use the phone app the same way as previously mentioned.

Now you have your money on your phone, to see it use the relevant app. In the app you can then too, buy packages.

I failed to mention that if you have a bank account you can load money directly through the app, saving you the walk.
